Order of Operations Boom Cards is an internet based activity. It is paperless and self-grading. Great for 1:1 classrooms. Can also be used in a center or with an interactive whiteboard. Students get instant feedback after each question. Boom Cards play on any digital device with an internet connection. Hosted by Boom Learning.
The target grade level is 6th grade. All the questions and answers involve positive integers. Half of the questions involve exponents. The are no nested grouping symbols. The parenthesis indicate grouping only. The x is used for the multiplication sign. Students will be shown an expression written horizontally. They will select an answer from one of 4 choices.
Prerequisite skills needed to use this activity
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers.
- Understanding that an exponent represents repeated multiplication.
- Understanding that operations inside parentheses should be completed first, followed by exponents, then multiplication/division, and finally addition/subtraction.
- Recognizing that multiplication and division are of equal priority and must be handled sequentially from left to right.
- Understanding that addition and subtraction are also of equal priority and must be done in the order they appear from left to right.
